Holiday Bread Ideas

Holidays, so they say, are a time to strengthen bonds with family and community by celebrating a society’s core values, a time of both joy and contemplation. But then again, holidays are also a great time to stuff yourself sick on the tastiest treats you get to eat all year. What’s Christmas, after all, without a little fruit bread, or thanksgiving sans piping-hot dinner rolls? But don’t get stuck in a rut this year. Try something new, like Italian holiday bread. Open yourself and your mouth up to some different holiday bread ideas.

  • Christmas: Eggnog bread is a delicious alternative holiday bread recipe to go with all those traditional Christmas fruits and nuts.
  • Easter: Cross-shaped croissants are great, but why not give a traditional Italian Romano Cheese egg-bread or a slightly sweet Armenian Choereg a chance?
  • New Years Day: Sure, eat your cabbage, but have a slice of Varelopita (Greek New Year’s bread) too, & Chinese New Year’s Turnip Cake bread is a neat treat.
  • Rosh Hashanah: Round Challah is as delicious as the braided variety, but spicy Sephardic pumpkin bread, with its ginger and cardamom, is a fine alternative.
  • Saint Patrick’s Day: American’s like to tie one on during St. Patty’s, so loaves of Soda, Potato and sweet Treacle bread are good for soaking up excess spirits.
  • Thanksgiving: Dinner Rolls and Pumpkin Bread are no-brainers this time of year, but Zucchini Bread makes an excellent addition to the turkey-table.
  • Valentine’s Day: Bread may sound less romantic than a box of candy, but that’s just what the candy-makers want you to think; go for chocolate breads instead!
