Knife Handle Materials
There’s more to consider when
choosing kitchen cutlery knives than just
the type
of blade. Knife handle materials also
play a part in the overall value of a knife.
• Wood Knife Handles:
This type of handle provides a superior grip,
but needs more maintenance than plastic or
stainless steel handles usually require, and
arguably are prone to absorbing microorganisms
• Molded Plastic or
Composition Knife Handles: A knife
handle of this type is much easier to care
for than wooden handles as they will not absorb
dirt, food particles and microorganisms and
are easily cleaned, but molded plastics can
become brittle in time and are sometimes slippery
in the hand during use.
• Plastic-Wood Combination
Knife Handles: These are meant to
be a perfect fusion of the best qualities
of both wood and molded plastic handles in
that they possess a superior grip, yet do
not require the maintenance of all wood handles
and are also not as porous as wood handles,
discouraging inhabitation by microorganisms.
• Stainless Steel Knife
Handles - Metal knife handles are
more durable and give the knife a little extra
heft, but they may become slippery in the
hand during use.
