In America, oat bread is often referred as Johnny cakes, name taken from the old English jannock (oat bread); however, this bread is popular all over the world, whether boiled or baked.
In India, the most popular oat bread recipe includes honey for a sweeter taste. There are large varieties of oat breads, which may include one of more additional ingredients such as carrots, apples, spices, soy, etc… However, this is one of the most basic recipes that you can fix with your special touch for a unique flavor:
Oatmeal Brown Bread
Ingredients
1-cup whole-wheat flour
1-pint Quaker oats
3/4 cup corn meal
3/4 cup molasses
2 teaspoons salt
1-pint sour milk
- Mix all the ingredients together
- Steam the dough in greased molds for about 2 hours
- Pour the dough into timbale cups and finish to bake for another half-hour
- Use honey instead of molasses for a golden color similar to the Indian bread
