Wheat Allergy
and Gluten Intolerance Symptoms
The symptoms of wheat allergies
and Gluten Intolerance are numerous. Presented
here is a list of possible symptoms. Only a
doctor can diagnose these conditions.
Allergic reactions to wheat
can begin to manifest within minutes or up to
hours after eating or inhaling wheat. They include:
· Hives
· Eczema,
· Angioedema (swelling due to allergy)
· Abdominal cramps
· Nausea and vomiting
· Oral allergy syndrome
· Asthma
· Allergic rhinitis
In connection to exercise reactions
to gliadin or gluten can cause:
· Urticaria
· Angioedema
· Life-threatening anaphylaxis.
Gluten Intolerance, or Coeliac Disease normally
presents at the age of 6-24 months. Symptoms
include:
· Intestinal malabsorption
· Impaired growth
· Abnormal stools
· Abdominal distension
· Muscle wasting/poor muscle tone (hypotonia)
· Poor appetite or irritability, following the
introduction of cereals into the diet
In adults, the symptoms are
varied, but may include:
· Severe weight loss and
· Diarrhea
· Bulky, offensive stools
· Cramps
· Abdominal bloating,
· Flatulence and even
· Constipation.
· Ataxia.
· Recurrent oral aphthous ulcers
· Iron-deficiency anemia,
· Folate deficiency anemia
· Calcium metabolism disturbance.
· Dermatitis herpetiformis (itchy blisters on
the buttocks, knees and elbows)
